My paintings primarily depict US/Mexico border people in their environments. I have often characterized my work as people doing what they do. The color pallet and brush strokes I choose reflect the world I inhabit. My painting is intended to be expressive and emotive. My intention is to celebrate and honor those whom I paint.
How does the region influence your art?
As a border native, I have been influenced by the blending of cultures, languages and characteristics of two distinctive countries. My paintings are a way of appreciating and sharing the richness and color of this world. The faces I paint are ones that I have grown up with. The colors are those of the architecture, landscape and spirit of the border.
My influences have been the great Mexican muralists, the U. S. Ashcan Art Movement and the streets and neighborhoods of El Paso, Texas and Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
