In creating the United Farm Workers's Teatro Campesino movement in 1965, Valez is heralded as the father of Chicano theatre. For 55 years, he has sustained his theatre group. Vladez also wrote and directed La Bamba and Zoot Suit. Valdez recieved the National Medal of Arts in 2015.
